If anyone is looking for remote devops roles within the USA, ideally PST time zone, then please hit me up!

@Lauren Langdell - remote as in global or remote as in US?

Remote in the US for now - i'll let you know if anything changes though!

Thanks - it's helpful to put the region in any postings for "remote" roles - it's a big wide world. 🙂

I know this is a crazy and uncertain time for everyone, particularly if you have a job that's not remote. I went freelance about a year ago for the sole purpose of being remote. If anyone would like any tips on going freelance, finding freelance work, etc, feel free to hit me up. I'm by no means an expert, but happy to help where I can.

(This is a no strings attached offer. Just looking to help.)

I did a tech screen with Microsoft this week. The guy told me it's terrible mostly to work there remote as you are inviaible. I think I flopped the tech screen too, but first real coding "puzzle" related interview in years. Pretty disappointed, as I found the problem interesting but I haven't had a need to work on creating functions like the guy was demonstrating. Retrospectively I think it's much better to have someone present something that they've done related to the field and then do some questions rather than an arbitrary intellectual puzzle. Not excuse me, but I consider myself decently sharp, blog regularly, continue my education, and to not pass a text screen because of a algorithm simulating something Excel would do in the back end was kind of disappointing

I think I'm going to still keep looking for remote work positions. Just need to find the right place. I've done remote work for 6 months straight in the past and loved it

I actually prefer to be on site when I'm able to be. But I've been almost entirely remote now for about 2.5 years and I'm incredibly productive. It took me a good year to figure out my balance though. Its easy to overdo things when you are passionate about the work you do and not bound by the trappings of traditional office hours or daily soul sucking commutes.

In my experience it's not worth it to try and change the minds of someone who does not want remote employees for any reason. You won't change their minds. Find a remote friendly or remote first company and go from there.

but aren't all tech companies remote friendly now? it would be pretty embarrassing in years to come for any tech company to not provide remote opportunities during the pandemic.

as someone who keeps an eye on the job market: no, they are not all remote friendly, not by a long shot

there's a big difference in being forced into it by circumstances, and having a culture that actually supports it well

i suppose that's true. i imagine more companies will accept this even after all this is over, but who knows. i did try working remotely from non remote companies and it was harder than just working for an already established remote or hybrid remote companies

I figure if we wait long enough in quarantine minds may change on their own... My only hope is that commercial real estate never recovers from this when businesses realize that having huge buildings to herd workers into actually doesn't make much difference in actual productivity.

I realized long ago that the security boundary for an organization is at the identity, not the firewall. Shifting workloads for employees to match this new reality and eliminate reliance on VPNs was the 'future' 10 years ago and one which we in IT can make a reality with current technology.

that being said, I miss the free coffee and needless display of office swag....

last office I worked in I brought in a plastic lawn squirrel (thing looked real) and placed it at the top of some random cube on another floor for the heck of it.

by the time I left it had been to every floor and cube, had a hat, a name, and a mini-bandanna.

A good remote company needs a remote-work culture. Office or bull pen based companies have people who chose to work there and in that way. I've worked for companies that are not remote friendly (but had the tools for remote workers). Things like hallway architecture choices or decisions made in a silo still happened.

These companies that are remote-capable but are forced to work remote are having problems ranging to employees not knowing how to use a video camera (dogs barking, kids playing, inappropriate back drops, etc) to failing to check in or chatting too much (slack overload)

But at least it is a taste, and for those that remote makes sense for will start their own companies or add to the idea that working remote is common place

Anyone every worked for slalom build? Glassdoor and all seem pretty positive on it. Wondering if anyone has worked it before and have first hand experience at it. Keeping my options open as at a good company just wanting to consider more opportunities to expand as an developer and not be running so solo on code work.
