friend of mine just mentioned they are looking for a Build Engineer based in Seattle (sorry no remote afaik) at Undead Labs (Creators of the hit survival-fantasy franchise State of Decay). For those not familiar with the game industry, this is typically a hybrid ops/dev type role - you're responsible for making sure All The Things(tm) build, and usually for the pipeline that makes it happen. if you're interested (didn't get anything more, he's swamped today) PM me an email address and I'll connect you with them.

I really dig these questions.

These questions are too easy.

Haha, watch out 😉

It's how you answer them. They are starting points that allow the interviewer to dig down into your actual role/involvement and thought process.

Starter questions into deeper technical grilling 🙂

What I like about them is that they are open ended and let the candidate have some control over the interview process. This let's the candidate shine by showing off potential strong suits, but can also quickly identify lack of experience based on how they answer. Do you have a preference on interview questions?

From an "objective" perspective, yes, it's harder to grade a candidate with open ended interviews, but as someone who personally doesn't test well, I don't like standardized tests or interview processes.

Nah, I give a good deal of the technical interviews where I work. I tend to zero in on where ever the candidate says they are the strongest and hammer 'em like a horrible adaptive Cisco exam that keeps giving you IS-IS questions over and over again.

I like situational questions. Imagine a customer came in with the following ask: .... How would you respond to that?
Igor

It's also open ended, but instead of the candidate framing everything in terms of their prior experience, you can get a feel for their style of thinking/working through problems
Zachary Loeber

Totally, its more of a conversation on how they tackle issues. Of course if their style involves way too much clicking and such I get a little frowny ...

Include some architectural questions when you see how they design stuff and think about security, manageability and scalability and IMO you’re golden
