Hey Folks,

We at Dgraph Labs use Github as our VCS. And we have recently migrated our CI/CD setup to Github Actions. This was a huge win for us internally, especially in a startup setting like ours. Our wins were broadly in these 3 areas Compute Costs, Maintenance Efforts & Configuration Time.

With this new setup, we designed & developed Dynamic AutoScaling of Github Runners in house. We are thinking of open-sourcing this project. If there is any interest here - pls do reach out. We were able to save ~87% $$ of our Compute Costs with this setup.

Hi all

I am building this VSCode extension that will allow you to send a selected part of your text to another user based on their github profile or alternatively share a code to access it from another VScode

I call it PastePortal as it will enable users to "Copy-Paste" without having to so do.

Just select your text, Use the key-bind, then either send the Copy to a user for paste or get a UID of the Copy for another user to Paste it in their VSCode,

It will also have a frontend.

Repo is private atm.

Hit me up if you want to get involved! certainly a great project if you like any of :
• Clouformation/SAM
• VSCode
• Javascript
• AWS

Hi all,
I want to share with you a project, more of an initiative, in Israel’s Open-Source FB community.
In this repository, you’ll find testimonies by companies, stating their vision about OSS, and how they actively contributing to the OSS realm.
That way, we hope more companies will contribute to OSS in one way or another, and allow people to choose companies to work for or contribute to certain projects based on that 🙂
If you want to have your company featured in this initiative (even if you’re not based in Israel), let me know 🙂

More about this initiative here.

https://github.com/zloeber/awesome-declarative-config <-- Something I put together for maintaining an 'awesome list' of declarative-style applications, engines, and platforms I come across. I mainly set this up to screw around with Cuelang (I'm 100% honest) and it does not have the github actions workflows setup yet but it is a good start for such a list and I welcome contributions

Blog on using open source terraform modules in production instead of home-baking all modules: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25660732

As always, gave some Cloudposse shout outs 👍️

Hello, folks. I published a post on my experience upgrading to Terraform 0.13 in production. I hope it helps anyone looking to do the same.

oh wow thank goodness it's Terraform for deploying frontends - i was worried for a moment someone had written a terraform-js frontend library 😛

I wrote a blog on making frontends, and happened to mention a few cloudposse modules in examples: https://transcend.io/blog/hassle-free-frontends-in-aws

I'm a big fan of rundeck. It's got some rough edges (mostly around documentation) but they've been doing a good job of addressing those over the past year. I've centralized all of our cron jobs on rundeck so there's alerting and logging built in, and it's been really nice to be able to give engineers jobs that they can run for specific tasks.

We're using the open source version, so aside from the machine it runs on there's been no monetary cost. Getting it setup is pretty simple, their ACL is a bit tricky but they've made some huge improvements to the documentation about the ACL recently, and they have a command specifically for testing ACL policies.

On the topic of run books I see rundeck mentioned. Is it a complicated or expensive undertaking to start using that? We have a bit of overload going on with the team but if it makes things easier then maybe it's something worth looking at. I'm definitely not impressed with AWS SSM automation docs. Right now the equivalent runbook for us is a distributed repo that I include full of ASCII doc and scripts that gets copied to bastion boxes. I would like something that's a little bit smoother for people to pick up though since I've not gotten anybody to start using it yet

I'm a huge fan of random naming when possible. I still cringe because the application developers randomized all the database names. It makes me very upset inside. It's basically a random number string thing. To me it's so completely reasonable and easier to manage if it's simply used some pet names with a couple random alpha characters at the end.. so much more fun easy to find instances and still provides randomization

My production instances all have stuff like itchy elephant and others. I made the naming based on the original null label module yalll did. This was I can't be blamed , terraform picked the name. 😂..... I am just waiting for someone to notice

I'd love to hear the conversation that leads to that being a pet name. It would have to be all kinds of bizarre and entertaining.

"mozzarella stick plum pushpin" -> sounds like either an insult or an affectionate pet name for your significant other....

haha, I was looking more at the binary releases. I've looked at so many of them in tinkering with the cloudposse 'packages' app that it is hard for me to not want to judge a project if they use strange/non-standard release binary names in github releases. 🙂

strange release names, you say? I present Rundeck. 3.1.2: "mozzarella stick plum pushpin"

Sharing in case anybody has a need for this — https://github.com/masterpointio/terraform-aws-nuke-bomber

Been running it for a week or so and it’s doing the job I intended it to: keeping my AWS test account cleaned up and reducing costs!

I just wrote and released https://github.com/transcend-io/terragrunt-atlantis-config if anyone is interested. It generates atlantis.yaml content for terragrunt repos by analyzing the dependency blocks (and some other stuff)

Hopefully someone else finds it useful, I'll gladly take feature requests

Hey everyone! Erik mentioned that I should post here from my post in #packer. I recently started a new project that is a web user interface for creating Packer templates. The project is still really new but has the potential to grow. I was hoping to get some feedback from the community!

The name of the project is Punk and the source code can be found here: https://github.com/jasonwalsh/punk

There's also a Heroku app if you're interested in checking out the app via your web browser: https://murmuring-forest-55290.herokuapp.com/

This isn't my project or anything but I ran across sail (https://sail.dev/) and it looks like it could be promising for some use cases. Gist is that it encapsulates a full development environment in a Dockerfile and uses the vscode-server project (from the same company) which can also be self-hosted from my understanding.

Recently moved over to AWS CodeCommit for a lot of internal work - I find the CodeCommit console a little cumbersome and as a long time hub / Github cli user I decide to start building a CodeCommit CLI - early stages and all that: https://github.com/carthewd/c3
