Bah, trying try(data.aws_ecs_container_definition.default.image, local.bootstrap_service_container_image) causes a cyclical dependency
joshmyers
joshmyersover 6 years ago(edited)
Adding an explicit depends_on gets over the bootstrap issue so I’m not sure the live lookup stuff is necessary?
joshmyers
joshmyersover 6 years ago
data "aws_ecs_task_definition" "default" {
  task_definition = "${var.namespace}-${var.name}-${var.environment}-${var.pool}"

  depends_on = [aws_ecs_task_definition.default]
}

@Clayton Wheeler / @Mads Hvelplund / @Maarten van der Hoef Looks like https://github.com/Genomenon/terraform-aws-airship-ecs-service/blob/master/modules/live_task_lookup/output.tf#L19 is broken in 0.12

OK, I made PR #91. Thanks for the nudge on this!

Wondering what folks are doing to deploy ECS tasks via CI/CD that services etc are managed with Terraform
Clayton Wheeler
Clayton Wheelerover 6 years ago
oh hey, hmm, I got pulled away from that so I don't have it quite in release-worthy shape yet like I'd hoped to, but a decent amount. The basics, definitely. I've only done a little bit of load balancing, and haven't touched autoscaling, cron tasks, placement, or volumes at all. But running normal containers esp. with Fargate, using Secrets Manager and IAM, service discovery, repository credentials, that works.
joshmyers
joshmyersover 6 years ago
By the latter I assume you mean for_each and depends_on for modules etc?
Maarten van der Hoef
Maarten van der Hoefover 6 years ago
I'd like to understand if it's more important to have the current module fitted into 0.12 or have a cleaner design based on 0.13.

hey everyone
Is there pls any update on porting https://github.com/blinkist/terraform-aws-airship-ecs-service to terraform 0.12?

hey has any one messed with appmesh with this module?

Any folks here using DataDog to monitor Fargate?
Clayton Wheeler
Clayton Wheelerover 6 years ago(edited)
Hi, I've also ported a fair chunk of this to 0.12, building off of what @Mads Hvelplund and @Maarten van der Hoef started. I've got it working for my use cases, although I haven't tested things like load balancers and scheduled tasks. Sounds like there are a few 0.12 efforts going, but I'd be happy to open up a PR or something if this would make for a useful starting point. https://github.com/Genomenon/terraform-aws-airship-ecs-service/tree/terraform12

Hi, I'm working on porting to 0.12, and when I try to run the example from here https://airship.tf/getting_started/airship.html I get this error when trying to start the task:
ClientException: hostname is not supported on container when networkMode=awsvpc.

any idea?

Hey All, looking at the Full Example documented. Trying to piece together how I can pass in my locals map for env vars.

Hi @Jan Szumiec It will be merged, I'm also happy to pair on it, and/or help out. I suggest to have a chat with @Mads Hvelplund as well to see where he left it and to understand what his thoughts are.

what's the policy around supporting 0.12? are you going to switch over at some point or maintain two releases?

hey peeps, i'm looking at the ecs module - it looks like it's not 0.12 compatible, but someone has started work on that

i seem to recall that you can trick the "type checker" by nesting maps, but i haven't looked at i since my christmas vacation

same thing that is a problem for the health check
Mads Hvelplund

the problem is something related to mixed types, if i recall.

Hi,
I've tried out @Mads Hvelplund 0.12 branch, but it fails when parsing the container environment. Does someone got container env working?
Error: ECS Task Definition container_definitions is invalid: Error decoding JSON: json: cannot unmarshal array into Go struct field ContainerDefinition.Environment of type ecs.KeyValuePair
container_envvars = {
ENV_VARIABLE = "SOMETHING"
}

@Mads Hvelplund thanks for the tips; I'll start from there !
Mads Hvelplund
Mads Hvelplundalmost 7 years ago
But if you are looking to upgrade to 0.12, I would suggest you fork my branch and start from there, trying to get all the setups in the ./examples folder to run
Mads Hvelplund
Mads Hvelplundalmost 7 years ago
@vluck it depends; do you need access to secrets or to be able to define container healthchecks (not the same as load blancer healthchecks) ? Everything else works.
For me, however, those are deal breakers, but i don't have the time to work on it at the moment, so unless my work requires it, it will have to wait 🤷

Thanks for this @Mads Hvelplund. Can I ask how complete is the conversion to 0.12, would you say?
